Schedule: Full Time, 8HR Night Shift, 9:00 pm to 7:30 am Monday through Friday

POSITION SUMMARY:

Obtain and process specimens from inpatients and outpatients according to SGMC laboratory policy/procedures using correct and strict patient identification and in sufficient sample quantity for the performance of laboratory tests as ordered by the physician. Exposure to biohazardous specimens and/or patients, needles, standard medical equipment to perform phlebotomy is required. Responsible for accurate entry of laboratory requests, patient demographics, and billing information using the hospital’s Lab system and HBOC system. Is a Public Relations representative from the Laboratory to the Laboratory's customers. Perform various other non-routine departmental support activities as directed by Supervisor. Transport patient specimens of UN3373 / Category B type from outpatient customers to the Laboratory, using SGMC Lab vehicles. Will NOT transport UN 2814 or UN 2900 samples or narcotics. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • High school graduate or GED preferred. 
  • Prior experience in phlebotomy or medical assistance training preferred, certified training in phlebotomy preferred. 
  • Current in CPR certification.
  • Competence in phlebotomy, general office skills, and medical terminology. 
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity, specifically hand-eye coordination. 
  • Demonstrate accuracy, and attention to detail in performing data entry. 
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, but frequent walking is also required. 
  • Effective communication skills in dealing with the public, physicians and other hospital staff are required. 
  • Temperament suited to short cycle repetitive work. 
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide phlebotomy for laboratory testing appropriate to the age of the patients seen in their assigned area. 
  • Must be able to assess and interpret data or signs about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide the care needed by our patient groups (i.e., neonate, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric). 
  • Normal color vision necessary. 
  • Must possess a valid and current driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS- ADA INFORMATION: 

Modern hospital Laboratories with access to patient areas and physician offices. Work activities will include: light lifting (not to exceed 25 pounds), walking, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, and pushing objects. Must be about to operate office equipment, computer terminals and keyboards, computerized lab equipment and an automobile. Must be able / certified to perform CPR.
